Backup is often defined as "the copying of data for the purpose of having a second copy of an original source, in case of damage to the original data source". It's a simple concept of course, but can be time consuming and a burden. Hence, it is too often either ignored, or done insufficiently regularly.

Further, it is sometimes a complex task. Backing up active for example databases requires specialized software that often has to be integrated with the database system to prevent corruption.

The metrics associated with data backup are usually considered to be: Recovery Point Objective, Backup Window, Restore Time and Retention Time. They real key, however, is PROCEDURE. Without a procedure, to ensure timely (or automatics) backups, the whole concept falls apart.
